Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a plant from the Amazon forest. It grows as a woody vine that can reach up to 10 m in length. It has distinctive red fruits that open partially when ripe, revealing up to three black seeds covered in the lower half with a thick white coating. And it is the seeds that contain valuable properties used in preparations such as dietary supplements 1 .
Guarana has the highest concentration of caffeine (over 6% in the seed part) observed so far in nature 1 .
Caffeine is quickly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching its maximum concentration in the blood 30–120 minutes after consumption, depending on the individual conditions of the body and the presence of food in the stomach 3 .
