The chemical compound melatonin is a derivative of tryptophan, which is naturally synthesized in the pineal gland. It is secreted under the influence of light (mainly sunlight), and its concentration changes with age. The mechanism of action of this hormone involves binding to cell membrane receptors, nuclear receptors and intracellular proteins 2 .
Melatonin helps alleviate the subjective feeling of jet lag. The beneficial effect occurs when consuming 0.5 mg shortly before going to bed on the first day of travel and for the next few days after arriving at the destination.1 This is especially important for people who travel frequently and change time zones4 .
